- Order the final reading out of the gas, electric, and water meter.
- Request termination of gas, electricity, water, telephone, and other services (i.e. diaper service and newspaper delivery).
- Request change of address cards from your postman, and send your forwarding address to the local post office.
- Write the utility companies in the city to which you are moving to inquire about fees for installation services.
- Transfer your insurance on household goods and personal possessions so they will be properly covered en route and at your new home.
- Notify your automobile insurance company of your change of address.
- Notify the principal at your children’s school about your intended move and request a letter from your children’s teachers covering their status in school.
- Obtain all medical and dental records, as well as eyeglass prescriptions.
- Obtain permission to move your car and other possessions that aren’t paid for.
- Transfer your bank accounts, and close your safety deposit box.
- Have your present bank arrange credit references for establishing new accounts in your destination city.
- Arrange sufficient cash or travelers’ checks to cover the cost of moving expenses until you make new banking connections. Moving companies generally require cash or certified check.
- Leave keys to your property with your real estate agent or neighbors.
- Leave your new address with your real estate agent.
- Winterize your home and check thermostats and water and heater settings.
- Notify your place of worship that you are moving.
- Obtain birth and baptismal records of your children.
- Request shot records for your pets from your veterinarian.
- Arrange for the transfer of your stock brokerage accounts.
Things To Do For Moving Day
- Clearly mark and set aside items you don’t want to be loaded including paperwork pertaining to the move.
- Pack special items for the kids, and point this box out to the driver so it’s one of the first unloaded. In addition, you might want to obtain a caregiver to take kids and movers while you are packing your items. Have the caregiver bring the kids back prior to the truck’s departure, and make sure your children understand where their belongings are going.
- Get rid of flammable items. Eliminate as much trash as you can, and try to make a deal with a neighbor to use their trash container for last-minute debris. Remove items from inaccessible areas like crawl spaces or attics.
- Reserve a carton for last-minute items that you may need immediately upon your arrival including toiletries, first-aid kits, pain relievers and other medications, pet supplies, and whatever you find necessary.
- Reserve a parking space for the moving truck, particularly if you live in a congested area, to avoid long carry charges.
- Clear walkways and make it easy for your movers to get in and out of your house. Move potted plants, floor and doormats, rugs, and low-hanging items.
- Point out special items, including particularly fragile items. Point out the boxes you would like to have unloaded first.
- Take care of your driver and crew members! Consider their needs, and while it’s not necessary to provide an elaborate meal, it may be nice to get some breakfast rolls or order pizza for lunch. Keep water and pop on hand, or on summer days, Gatorade, or some type of sports drink. Advise the driver and crew which restroom you would like them to use.

- Before the driver leaves, make sure you understand all the paperwork you are signing. Provide the driver with contact information, and ask your driver when he/she will be loading your shipment.
- Find out as many details as you can prior to the driver’s departure. Keep in mind that delivery dates are an estimate, and remain flexible.

Things To Do At Your New Home
- Check on the status of your utilities.
- Have your stove serviced, check the pilot light.
- Check the pilot light on hot water heaters and furnaces.
- Have the refrigerator, automatic washer, and television checked.
- Ask the mailman if there is mail which he had been holding for your arrival.
- Update your new address on your driver’s license.
- Register your car within the time allowed in the state to which you have moved.
- Register your children in school.
- Register your family in your place of worship.
- Visit city offices and register to vote.
